The Swedish boutique Artilleriet is offering these two limited edition city guides designed by David Ehrenstrahle. One map with a guide of places and experiences in Manhattan, New York of 2010,  and one of Paris for the coming year. Limited to 473 pieces and printed on 160 gram Conqueror paper, numbered and sealed, it’s maybe not the most practical or accurate guide, but definitely the most beautiful!

The Dutch web designer Christian Annyas has put together the different designs of Chevrolet’s speedometers over the past 100 years in a very plain and graphical way. ‘Speedometers are those kind of items you look at thousands of times during your life, without ever really noticing. You notice the speed, not the meter. And if you do notice the meter chances are you don’t realize someone actually designed it.’ A really nice overview on a graphical evolution from 1941 to 2011. Reykjavík  based designer Högni Valur Högnason finished the Icelandic Academy of the Arts with ‘To die will be an awfully big adventure’. The project is about the deaths in our life and consist of three pieces: The first one is about childish innocence, black dripping game consoles, a football and more icons from our past. The second one is about love with roses, lipstick and sweet memories and third one about death it self. Make sure to check his website, there’s some more pretty good work.

Founding father and designer behind Soulland Silas Adler has designed a fashion stamps for the Danish postal service, Post Danmark. This is the first time in Danish history that Post Danmark is issuing fashion stamps. The stamp will be revealed and released on August 4th during Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Last week a chunk of new magazine issues hit the doormat… The new issue of Monocle for some international style and retail inspiration with their new Quality of Life index. The new Diner Journal for the best American recipes. The beautiful issue of The White Review for the much needed literary inspiration and last but not least the 14th issue of Slanted for the (typo-)graphic inspiration.
In this new issue, the Grotesque issue, Slanted focuses on current fonts that are in tradition of Lineal, Neo- or Geometric Grotesque. Great inspiration from the type designers in the turn of the 19th to 20th century. This issue features some lovely illustrations, essays and interviews by Anna Sinofzik, Hans Gremmen, Edwin van Gelder and many more. Paper is all about texture, and that texture becomes more and more important since the alternative of e-paper doesn’t have any texture or any emotion in its material. That’s why it is so important for graphic designers to have sample collections, books and magazines – all to see how paper really feels and if the emotion fits within their design.
My favorite paper supplier GF Smith is completely aware of that and just launched its new and beautiful designed Paper Selector. A box with all the different paper samples, textures and colors in one. For me as a graphic designer a true paper heaven! It is good to see that in these tough times for the paper industry they still dare to take the risk and make these beautiful packages!

I love books, I love magazine and I love it when magazines are publishing about books. The fifth issue of Eight:48 ‘Counter-Print: Cover to Cover’, is all about books! Nam, the Tokyo-based graphic collective, will run an exhibition/creation to share their believe that we can find fantasy right in the reality. “We try to present the ambiguousness of the recognition of what is ‘fake’ and what is ‘real’ by showing the setup images created by using familiar spaces and objects we see everyday.”

As Vivienne Westwood has put it together: “It is not enough to follow world politics, see films and read the prize-winning best seller. This is superficial, you need to go deep in order to understand who you are, what the world is and how things could be better. This involves culture which can only be acquired by self-education: human beings should mirror the world.”
