Fade
September 9

lopresti

Soon at Brooklyn based gallery Like the Spice, the second solo show by Eric LoPresti – Fade. ‘The works in Fade are predominated by the soft colors of the desert steppe – grays, ochres, pinks and dark blues. In contrast, the imagery is dramatic in scope and subject, including vast aerial views of fractured desert landscapes, nuclear test sites in Nevada, and explosions from undisclosed arid locations, many of which are based on photographs LoPresti took himself from the windows of chartered planes.’
Opens Friday September 11, Like the Spice Gallery — Sept 11 – Oct 5

The Future Is Old

The Future Is Old is a solo exhibition of recent works on paper by Marijn Akkermans in the Gabriel Rolt Gallery, Amsterdam.
‘Perfect – perfect men, women – husbands and wives – sons and daughters – perfect families with the perfect dog. Marijn Akkermans makes drawings of these; rich, dense ink drawings – with exquisite detail and optical punch – showcasing an astute craft, focus and understanding of his medium…’ A must see when you’re in Amsterdam.

Shining with the secret of it
August 18

S. J. Hart

I like these strange and beautiful coloured drawings by S. J. Hart. “…Her work combines traditional elements of etching, drawing, and figurative painting with a taste for the gothic, abstract, and decorative. Recent series explore the psychological space of figure and portrait paintings, Victorian post-mortem photography, and the weird zone in which zoological illustrations turn into images of childhood.” Now showing at CoLABProjects in New Orleans.

Moonmilk

ryan

Some lovely colourful photographs shot in caves across North America by Ryan McGinley – exhibited in London in the Alison Jacques Gallery. ‘…Over the last year, McGinley and his crew explored huge caves underground, venturing into unknown territory, seeking out spectacular natural spaces, some previously undocumented. The title of the show “Moonmilk” alludes to the crystalline deposits found on the walls of many caves; it was once believed that this substance was formed by light from celestial bodies passing through rock into darkened worlds below…’

The opening is thursday september the 10th and the exhibition will last until october 8th – Alison Jacques Gallery, 16-18 Berners Street London W1T 3LN

Erinnerungslandschaften
July 26

picture-81

Photographer Dana Mueller grew up in Communist East Germany and immigrated to the US in 1993. She came to question how we relate history and the human experience of going through war. The East Germans separated themselves from the guilt and horror of World War II, which contrasted to what her grandmother told her about the persecution of Jews. In her series ‘Erinnerungslandschaften‘ she explores the preservation of the past and our attempt to truly understand what has happened during World War II. The Brighton and Brooklyn series are worth to mention as well.

I got really inspired by Interview’s interview of Partners & Spade, ‘a sort of combo ad agency, creative consultancy, and art gallery boutique in a storefront on Great Jones Street in Manhattan’s NoHo’.

Sexy and the City, the upcoming exhibition at Yossi Milo Gallery ’shows the alluring, romantic and sometimes scandalous side of New York’s people and places. Capturing private, intimate moments and blatant displays of sexuality, these photographs span the decades from the 1940s to the present day, taken in landmark locations like the Brooklyn Bridge and in the quiet, out-of-the-way corners of the city.’

July 9 till August 28, Yossi Milo Gallery, 525 West 25th Street, New York, NY 10001.

Reflexions in the water, mirrors, shadows and blurred images of flowers and leaves, all playing with light and shade… Strange and beautiful images by Jorma Puranen at Gallery Anhava last februari. ‘For the artist, the use of reflections is a metaphor, a way to grasp the relationships of past and present, the issues of duration and recollection.’

Le Miroir Vivant
April 29

picture-1

We are honored to have Niels Shoe Meulman exhibiting in Tenue de Nîmes with his newest calligraffiti, Le Miroir Vivant. Shoe’s art and design shows us that words are images. His Calligraffiti pieces are as much about the form as the meaning of the words he chooses. They can be categorized as names, titles, short poems or objects. Along with the exhibited work, Shoe will paint the Tenue de Nîmes shop window and a special range of eight printed Denim Demon sweaters will be available for the happy few.

Le Miroir Vivant
May 9th / the end of June
Tenue de Nîmes, Elandsgracht 60 in Amsterdam.

Some/Things
April 13

01kurdistanedouardbeau-1

Some months ago I’d published the work of Monika Bielskyte. Her images made a huge impact on me, and it really fed my autumn feeling.
Recently she started SOME/THINGS, starting as an online magazine, resulting in a limited edition publication it is a place for something. Something with a story, something personal, something one could believe in, something that would not become outdated, something to reopen & rediscover year after year… Basically, its a collection of images and articles from inspiring and beautiful people…

In her words: — What interests us is uncommon beauty, shades of black, works of shadows & works of light, things timeless & expressions unique, depth, humility, discretion, communication, disappearance, traces, scars, violence & desire, need to be fully alive & need to see. —

Mirror Signals
March 30

falselights

If you’re in NY between April 4 and May 9 be sure you’ll visit the Josée Bienvenu Gallery. Justin McAllister is showing his paintings and drawings of fires that were set and documented by the artist in northeastern Pennsylvania during the summers of 2007 and 2008.

— Bonfires and campfires are sites of bonding and exchange … At the core of their function was the ability to quickly send a message over great distances. Imagining a scenario that involves the use of this archaic technology as the result of a loss of current ones, the paintings suggest an unknown cultural failure on a grand scale.
This feel of estrangement creates a romantic narrative for the work to develop in. The paintings reference the Hudson River School, its loaded iconography rich in symbolism and its masterful technique … The headlights of cars passing in the background are warning signals of the awareness that the paintings are not swept up in the nostalgia for the majestic landscapes but rather are theaters of manipulated information, mirror-signals of our time. —

Charles Avery is exhibiting ‘The Islanders: An Introduction’, an incredible and astonishing collection of drawings, prints and sculptures, in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
— For the past four years, Charles Avery has been working on an epic project which seeks to define an imaginary island off the Scottish coast. Through drawings, models and texts Avery describes the topology, cosmology and inhabitants of this fictional territory, creating a challenging space for philosophical inquiry. With around twenty drawings and prints, ten sculptures and twenty works on paper with mixed techniques, the exhibition ‘The Islanders: An Introduction’ brings together the project so far. —

The third photography portfolio by Julianne Swartz! Amazing, simple and fragile! Love it.

“Light is my primary material because it instills presence without physicality. It can be easily taken for granted, yet when contemplated, light becomes a sense provoking opportunity for thought.”

Now at Mixed Greens.
